Leaf: Grass-like Basal Leaves
Form: A dome-like cluster of lavender flowers at
the top of a leafless stem rises above flat, grass-like
basal leaves.
Location: Rock slopes, prairies, and shores. Found
in northern United States and Canada.
Economic/Ecological Importance: The bulbs of
wild onions are very strong but can be eaten
raw or parboiled. Early explorers ate them
and they were also used by the American
settlers to treat colds, coughs, and asthma,
and the repel insects.
